Improving school
sanitation
Changing the lives of school children across Africa
In 2020, we launched the School Toilet Enhancement Program (STEP) an initiative that upgrades toilets in Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria. Through STEP, we are aiming to reduce one of the barriers to school attendance – inadequate sanitation and hygiene facilities – which are largely preventable. So far, 36 schools have been upgraded and over 45,000 children have benefitted.

Benefitting the entire community
In Africa, schools are often at the centre of their communities. They become the focal points that local residents gravitate towards. This is one of the reasons why the STEP initiative is so important – not only does it provide better conditions for the hundreds of school children at each school, but also provides wider benefit to parents, teachers and residents.
The need for private sector investment
School children are the customers of tomorrow but schools themselves are customers today and there is a market opportunity for the educational system, particularly for local enterprises, in service provision. The Toilet Board Coalition has released a report to illustrate the untapped opportunities for private-sector solutions in school sanitation. Download the full report here.
Working with Rotary Chapters to scale sustainable school sanitation
Rotarians are playing a critical role addressing WASH—water, sanitation, and hygiene—necessary for community health, economic growth, education, and well-being. SATO were proud sponsor of the International Convention in 2023 and join the WASH in school breakout session to present some recent examples of our School Toilet Enhancement Programme.
By partnering with members of the WASH Rotary Action Group we can scale sustainable sanitation in schools to improve the lives of thousands of school children. Download our brochure to find out more.
