The role of toilets in building climate resilience
The climate crisis is drastically changing the world we live in and can limit progress in improving access to safely managed sanitation and hygiene, and achieving the goal of universal access. Toilets can be the hero as safely managed, accessible and inclusive sanitation can reduce associated methane emissions reducing greenhouse gas.
How SATO solutions can support climate resilient sanitation
Flood-resistant sanitation
The SATO Pit Liner protects groundwater from contamination by containing waste and the SATO V-Trap Connector diverts waste to two offset pits, managing waste levels and reducing contamination risks during floods.
Climate adaptation
The water-saving design of the SATO Pan means that it uses 80% less water than conventional toilets. Our consumer-centric, affordable and water-saving product design encourages communities to move away from open defecation.
The SATO Tap uses only 100ml per wash, inspiring consumers to maintain hygiene standards despite water scarcity concerns.
Safely managed sanitation
Combining SATO’s products and creating safely managed sanitation with an off-set, sealed system minimises groundwater contamination. This better protects consumers who face a rising number of adverse weather events.
Climate response
SATO offers easy-to-assemble and affordable products that can be quickly deployed in emergencies.
The SATO Slab is an easy-to-transport, sturdy solution that replaces a traditional concrete slab. It comes with the SATO pan and or Stool and can be installed quickly and easily. Meanwhile, the SATO Tap is portable by nature and offers a quick and innovative hand washing solution for communities without access to running water. Together, these solutions can be deployed to ensure climate refugees have positive sanitation and hygiene experiences.
SATO has designed toilets so that they require 80% less water compared to conventional flush toilets. Similarly, the SATO Tap uses just 100ml per wash. For climate refugees, who may face even greater water scarcity pressures, SATO’s water-saving solutions enable more individuals to access high-quality sanitation and hygiene.
Working together
Climate change isn’t going to be solved by one single party. LIXIL is a signatory to the Climate Resilience Sanitation Coalition – a membership group that is engaging governments, donors, academia, and the private sector to implement climate-resilient sanitation. Our objectives include integrating sanitation into climate policies, elevating the role of sanitation in climate discussions, and attracting financing.
