Ready before crisis strikes: SATO’s proactive approach to sanitation in humanitarian settings
By B Keith Cole
While natural hazards and geopolitical conflicts are unpredictable, our ability to respond to them should not be. By prioritising pre-staged stock and adaptable designs, we can ensure that safe sanitation is available the moment displaced families need it.
Historically, traditional manufacturing cycles have struggled to meet the urgent timeframes required on the ground when a crisis strikes. Standard supply chains—built around manufacturing on demand and long-distance shipping—simply cannot deliver products fast enough to match the immediate reality of humanitarian crises.
At SATO, part of LIXIL, we recognised that closing this gap required us to fundamentally rethink how emergency equipment is stored and deployed.
Shifting from reactive supply to pre-positioned readiness
To support our partners with the speed they require, emergency preparedness must shift from a reactive model to a pre-positioned strategy.
Instead of waiting for a disaster to trigger production, we work with regional warehouse partners to store complete, ready-to-deploy humanitarian kits close to high-risk zones. This strategic placement enables frontline organisations to access necessary inventory immediately when an emergency unfolds.
This model operates on a simple, continuous framework:
- Immediate deployment: Frontline responders draw directly from regional warehouses the moment a response is initiated.
- Automated replenishment: As inventory moves out to aid agencies, production facilities restock the regional hubs to ensure continuous operational readiness.
Purpose-built engineering for rapid field assembly
Rapid delivery is only effective if the equipment itself is practical for quick assembly under challenging field conditions.
Our humanitarian portfolio features modular components engineered to overcome common field challenges:
- SATO SuperStructure: A durable, weather-resistant shelter crafted from recycled materials to ensure rapid privacy, security, and dignity.
- Self-Sealing Toilet Slab: Easy-to-maintain pour-flush slab designed with SATO’s signature self-sealing trapdoor that blocks odor, flies, and disease vectors using minimal water.
- Interlocking Pit Liners: Structural supports that stabilize latrine pit soil walls without requiring masonry, specialised labour, or heavy machinery.
- Integrated Handwashing Stations: Simple water-efficient hygiene handwashing tap designed to integrate seamlessly alongside sanitation units.
The entire system is engineered for simple setup using basic, commonly available hand tools, allowing response teams and communities to establish functioning facilities quickly.
Designed for long-term community resilience
Displacement frequently lasts far longer than initial emergency timelines suggest. Temporary fixes often fail, leaving communities without reliable facilities over time.
Using high-durability materials that resist hard weather and repetitive handling, SATO’s complete humanitarian products can be disassembled, reassembled, and transported from one location to another to meet the needs of displaced populations. Our SATO pan has been proven to remain fully functional in households after a decade of use, long after an immediate crisis phase passes, providing ongoing value to the community.
Connect with SATO
SATO operates as a social business focused on product design and supply chain resilience, relying on international agencies, local NGOs, and community groups for last-mile delivery.
Direct feedback from our implementation partners drives our ongoing product refinements. Adapting product configurations to suit local materials, varied terrain, or specific security environments ensures our solutions remain safe, practical, and effective in diverse crisis contexts.
