5. FAQs

We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions.

  • How much do SATO products cost?

SATO products range in recommended retail price from $3 to $100 depending on factors such as the specific product(s), location, and size of order due to manufacturing, tariff, and transport/logistic cost variations. Please refer to Chapter 4 for bulk pricing ranges for SATO products in different regions.

LIXIL works with its licensed manufacturing partners to provide a customized price quote to partners upon request. Please contact our SATO Supply Chain team to request a customized price quote (SATOpricequote@lixil.com) or complete this contact form: https://sato.lixil.com/contact/.

  • How do I order SATO products?

Thank you for your interest in ordering SATO products! If you are looking for small quantities, you can order SATO products in one of three ways:

For bulk orders please contact your local SATO representative to advise you on the best approach.

  • How much time does it take to get SATO products from the time of the order?

SATO products are available the same day from local retailers. If you need to order SATO products, or purchase in bulk, the delivery time will depend on transportation. In many cases, SATO products can be delivered in as short as 3 weeks, while in others it will take up to 3 months.

The biggest factors influencing delivery time are where the products are coming from and to where they are being shipped, the size of the order, the availability on shipping vessels, etc. We advise that you contact SATO as early as possible to start conversations about placing an order, even if your project doesn’t have every detail confirmed. We can work together on shipment details to make sure your project has the products you need when you need them.

  • How does SATO determine whether it will manufacture a product locally vs. serving that market through an import model?

This is a question we receive often from USAID projects and other partners, and we understand that partners and projects want to serve their communities with the most efficient, cost-effective sanitation and hygiene solutions. In many cases, an import model may be the most efficient and cost-effective.

It is not feasible for LIXIL to manufacture SATO locally in every country where sanitation needs exist, so the company looks at many factors that inform whether to establish a local manufacturing base. These factors include: proven domestic demand for SATO – including an understanding of the acceptable product mix, pricing, distribution channels; availability of ISO-certified manufacturing partner(s) with machinery and equipment that meet SATO production standards; an ecosystem of distributors, retailers, and logistics partners to reach customers; and legal systems that defend the company’s intellectual property, among others.

Currently, SATO products are manufactured in eight countries – Bangladesh, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria. These locations have been identified because they have strong plastics manufacturing capacity that can produce high-quality, cost-effective sanitation and hygiene products in a region with high demand for affordable sanitation and hygiene products. They also may serve as regional hubs for export to additional markets.

  • How long does it take for LIXIL to establish new manufacturing for SATO?

When the conditions make sense and LIXIL identifies a new prospective manufacturing partner in a new geography, it typically takes anywhere from 6-18 months to have a new manufacturing partner fully functional.

  • How does LIXIL typically handle the method of shipping and delivery?

LIXIL typically ships products FOB origin (free on board, based on INCO terms) to our partners. This means that LIXIL is responsible for shipping the products to the port of origin and the buyer is responsible for sea or land freight from the port of origin to their final destination.

  • Can my USAID project import SATO products duty-free?

Most likely, yes. USAID projects have had success with getting VAT exemptions for SATO product shipments to reduce costs and make SATO products more affordable to end users. To start, please ask your AO/R if there is a trade benefit or exemption agreement in place between your project’s host government and USAID, and work with them to understand the process in your respective country.

  • Who can I talk to at SATO with questions about ordering and shipping?

Please reach out to your local SATO representative for further discussion.

  • How can I request product samples?

The easiest way to acquire very small numbers of product samples is to purchase from a local retailer. To identify a local retailer, or for larger quantities of samples, please reach out to your local SATO representative to begin this conversation. If there is not a SATO representative listed for your country, please contact pbl-sato@lixil.com.
