As we listened to the needs of past, present, and even future partners, we heard loudly and clearly a desire for partners to better understand how prior USAID-funded projects fared when using SATO products to deliver improved WASH outcomes. How did they collaborate with SATO? What drove their success? What were the lessons learned?

To that end, the interactive map below provides a snapshot of previous and current USAID projects where SATO products were incorporated, and features illustrative examples of the ways SATO collaborated with the projects.

The Challenge: As the government of Bangladesh advances toward safely-managed sanitation, there is a need for SATO and partners to collaborate to support households to upgrade their facilities with new product solutions, as well as to reach those last-mile households that do not yet have a facility.

How SATO Has Partnered:

The SATO Country Leader in Bangladesh meets regularly with implementers of the FtF activity to ensure their product supply needs are being met.
SATO teams meet with USAID Bangladesh to identify upcoming opportunities for SATO to strengthen the market, by directing project resources towards hard-to-reach areas.
SATO notifies USAID and the FtF team when there are new products being developed or ready to launch, so that they might consider incorporating these into their promotional activities.

Benin

The Challenge: The SSD project looked to introduce new sanitation product offerings to improve existing latrines in three countries – Benin, Cote d’ Ivoire and Ghana – and establish an effective market-based ecosystem selling SATO pans.

How SATO Has Partnered:

SATO supported SSD in establishing a small market test, introducing SATO pans to just 20 households to understand the market fit.
SSD discovered that the SATO pan was very well-received in Benin, and that families using ceramic latrines were willing to deconstruct toilets to include SATO pan because of lower water usage.
SSD supported partners to engage and train local entrepreneurs to hire concrete ring manufacturers to build the “SSD toilet” to set up a “one-stop shop” for entrepreneurs to have pre-fabricated inputs for toilets.

The Challenge: When USAID-funded projects end (and funding to support trained distributors also ends), maintaining the supply chain will rely heavily on ensuring the distributors can sustain their activities.

How SATO Has Partnered:

SATO obtained the list of distributors who were activated by T-WASH, contacted them to ensure they were still active, and promoted their services via social media and through SATO’s Customer Experience Center (where customers call to inquire about product benefits, availability, and installation).
SATO arranges and hosts quarterly supply chain meetings with these distributors to ensure they are supported and remain active for the long-term, thus ensuring sustainability of the sanitation supply chain.

SATO is supporting I-WASH’s market testing by providing SATO Stools and Taps to be used for market testing in two districts in Guatemala.
To support introducing new products to households, SATO will provide technical training to the local partners conducting the household interventions and surveys.
SATO is translating installation guides and product information into Spanish for this new market.

India

The Challenge: Working within the well-established sanitation economy in India and finding new partners.

How SATO Has Partnered:

Since 2019, SATO has been mentoring start-up organizations on how to enter the sanitation market.
This has helped create brand awareness for SATO across the sanitation businesses.
TBC hosted a government and private partnership program in Aug 2023, where SATO Asia’s representatives all participated by showcasing SATO products, thus introducing them to various government organizations at a single point.

Kenya

Project: Kenya – Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (KIWASH)

The Challenge: Awareness and affordability of latrines was relatively low in the project implementation areas in Kenya; innovative products and finance mechanisms were needed to increase uptake of sanitation and spark ongoing demand.

How SATO Has Partnered:

Upon meeting with the KIWASH team, LIXIL agreed to donate a small number of products for market testing with households as part of a broader revolving fund mechanism.
LIXIL then helped the team negotiate a subsequent purchase of SATO products from the manufacturer on credit, based on a history of successful payments.

Project: Western Kenya Sanitation Project (WKSP)

Type of Collaboration: Estimating demand and aligning supply to accelerate update of SATO products

The Challenge: The WKSP activity aims to develop and test a number of innovative approaches to market-based sanitation in a region of Kenya that remains behind in sanitation access.

How SATO Has Partnered:

In 2023, WKSP and LIXIL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), committing to close coordination between WKSP and the SATO Kenya team to ensure timely supply and exchange of lessons learned.
LIXIL is exploring how it can support financing mechanisms for retailers to alleviate the burden of having sufficient working capital to stock and sell SATO products.

Liberia

Project: Countrywide Sanitation Activity (CWSA)

During the proposal development phase, PSI reached out to LIXIL to express interest in working with SATO products in Liberia if they were to win the activity. This enabled LIXIL to begin advance planning, given the lack of demand for products in Liberia to date.
Upon receiving the award, CWSA and LIXIL began regular meetings to coordinate activities, and see how, through the Partnership for Better Living, LIXIL could accelerate activation of a local manufacturer in Liberia to service project-generated demand.
The SATO team prepared a forecasting template to assist CWSA to better communicate their expected sales, taking lead times into account to facilitate timely import of products, while LIXIL explores establishing a local manufacturer in the meantime.

Madagascar

The Challenge: The Small Town Sanitation Activity has planned activities in marketing and behavior change communications for sanitation, and LIXIL is piloting a new Brand Book for Partners to leverage partners’ expertise in building awareness of SATO through projects like STS.

How SATO Has Partnered:

When PSI was awarded the STS Activity, they notified LIXIL of their intention to work with SATO products. This enabled LIXIL to plan ahead and notify its licensed manufacturers of the opportunity in Mozambique.
Through its global partnership with PSI, LIXIL meets regularly with PSI and the Mozambique team to understand the challenges and opportunities for SATO and how LIXIL can support.
LIXIL has developed a Brand Book for Partners to provide guidance and assets for partners like PSI to promote SATO products through their own marketing channels. This resource will be tested in Mozambique following alignment between STS and LIXIL on the marketing plan.

Rwanda

Project: Isoko y’Ubuzima project

The Challenge: How to develop innovative consumer approaches to trigger sales, with donated SATO units.

SATO provided the Isoko y’Ubuzima project with donated SATO units to be used for ‘seeding’, meaning testing new market entry strategies.
Donated SATO units are bundled with mason services. For example, if a SATO product costs $5 locally and mason installation costs $10, the mason would offer both the SATO product and installation for $12, instead of $15.

Senegal

Project: Senegal Projet Assainissement – Changement de Comportement et Eau pour le Senegal (ACCES)

The Challenge: Through initial market testing, the ACCES activity identified strong demand for SATO products, but there was no formal supply chain in place.

How SATO Has Partnered:

Mid-way through the ACCES activity, LIXIL learned that there was initial success of SATO products, following a small donation of products for market testing. At the time, the ACCES activity was facing substantial delays with its effort to import products.
As a result, LIXIL opened up discussions with local import and distribution partners to determine how LIXIL could establish a formal partner for ongoing import to reliably service demand generated by ACCES both during and post-project. A partner was not established in time for project closeout, however.
The ACCES project is considered a key lesson learned for LIXIL; the Partnership for Better Living team led several meetings with the ACCES team before the activity ended to understand how LIXIL could have been engaged earlier to facilitate more efficient supply and exchange of information.

Tanzania

The Challenge: Through initial market testing, the ACCES activity identified strong demand for SATO products, but there was no formal supply chain in place.

How SATO Has Partnered:

Mid-way through the ACCES activity, LIXIL learned that there was initial success of SATO products, following a small donation of products for market testing. At the time, the ACCES activity was facing substantial delays with its effort to import products.
As a result, LIXIL opened up discussions with local import and distribution partners to determine how LIXIL could establish a formal partner for ongoing import to reliably service demand generated by ACCES both during and post-project. A partner was not established in time for project closeout, however.
The ACCES project is considered a key lesson learned for LIXIL; the Partnership for Better Living team led several meetings with the ACCES team before the activity ended to understand how LIXIL could have been engaged earlier to facilitate more efficient supply and exchange of information.

Mid-way through the ACCES activity, LIXIL learned that there was initial success of SATO products, following a small donation of products for market testing. At the time, the ACCES activity was facing substantial delays with its effort to import products.
As a result, LIXIL opened up discussions with local import and distribution partners to determine how LIXIL could establish a formal partner for ongoing import to reliably service demand generated by ACCES both during and post-project. A partner was not established in time for project closeout, however.
The ACCES project is considered a key lesson learned for LIXIL; the Partnership for Better Living team led several meetings with the ACCES team before the activity ended to understand how LIXIL could have been engaged earlier to facilitate more efficient supply and exchange of information.
