Creating change through the partnership for better living

In 2023, through the Partnership for Better Living – LIXIL’s cooperative agreement with USAID – we officially entered Madagascar to accelerate reliable access to SATO’s products. Together over the next three years, we will help create a sustainable market for our award-winning range of affordable and aspirational products in Madagascar, reaching 500,000 people. This will directly address the current sanitation crisis in Madagascar; according to the World Bank, as of 2022, just 12.3% of the population has access to basic sanitation services and more than a third of the population (approximately 10 million) practice open defecation.

EMPOWERING FEMALE TOILET SALES AGENTS

Sanitation offers meaningful career opportunities globally and is growing in popularity in Madagascar. However, in some markets, due to legacy perceptions and cultural norms, the industry is often male-dominated and crowds out opportunities for women to get involved. In partnership with Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), we’re upskilling the next generation of female toilet sales agents who enter communities, highlight the benefits of improved sanitation, and work with local masons to install and maintain products. This empowers the community with the skills they need to own their sanitation and unlock significant health, social and economic value. 

A local presence 

To address the barriers to consumers improving their sanitation and hygiene, we knew that we had to establish a local team and supply. That’s why we’ve hired SATO Country Leader, Nicole Andriamampianina, to drive growth, and partnered with INVISO Group, a leading Malagasy business conglomerate and import and distribution partner. By leveraging the expertise of our team and partners, we increase the availability of SATO products in the country, ensuring that consumers can upgrade their toilets when they choose.
