Tanzania

SATO is tackling Tanzania’s sanitation challenge, where 40% of households lack proper facilities, through affordable and innovative solutions.   Key projects and initiatives include:

  • Local manufacturing: SATO works with SILAfrica and collaborates with artisans, and entrepreneurs, empowering local communities and creating economic opportunities through distribution and sales networks.  Toilet business owners in rural areas play a crucial role in promoting and distributing SATO products.
  • National Sanitation Campaign Support: SATO actively participates in government-led campaigns to improve sanitation access and reduce open defecation, reaching vulnerable populations and contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 6.
  • Training Programs: SATO invests in training masons, artisans, and sanitation entrepreneurs, building local capacity for installation and maintenance of SATO products, further generating employment.
  • SATO Tap: Beyond toilets, SATO promotes hygiene with the affordable SATO Tap, a handwashing solution designed for communities with limited water resources.

Regional expansion: Using Tanzania as a hub, SATO exports to Malawi, Zambia, Madagascar, and Mozambique, partnering with local distributors and organizations like Hygiene Village Project, Water For People, and Water Aid to expand reach and impact.  Specific collaborations include Phalombe Hardware and Venture Investments in Malawi and a World Bank-supported project with partners in Zambia.
