In Kenya, millions of people lack access to basic sanitation facilities, with a significant portion relying on unclean and unsafe alternatives. This dire situation contributes to the spread of disease and undermines the well-being of families, particularly women and children. Enter SATO toilets — a revolutionary product designed specifically for the unique challenges posed by the Kenyan context.
Empowering Communities Through Local Partnerships
SATO’s success in Kenya is largely due to strategic collaborations with local partners. In 2017, SATO established a licensing agreement with SILAFRICA, a manufacturer serving Central and East African markets. This partnership facilitated local production and distribution, making SATO products more accessible and affordable for Kenyan communities. Additionally, SATO’s collaboration with UNICEF Kenya and the Ministry of Health has been instrumental in introducing and scaling up sanitation solutions in regions like Kitui and Siaya Counties.
Enhancing School Sanitation
Recognizing the critical role of proper sanitation in educational settings, SATO launched the School Toilet Enhancement Program (STEP) in 2020. This initiative focuses on upgrading school toilets to provide safer and cleaner facilities for students. By 2021, SATO, in partnership with UNICEF, the Ministry of Health, and the Embassy of Japan, had improved toilet facilities in 110 schools across Western and Eastern Kenya, benefiting over 60,000 students.
SATO toilets are more than just a means of sanitation; they contribute to improved attendance rates and better educational outcomes. Children, especially girls, are able to attend school without the fear and stigma associated with poor sanitation facilities. By equipping schools with SATO toilets, we help cultivate an environment conducive for learning.
These upgrades not only enhance the learning environment but also serve the broader community, as schools often function as venues for community gatherings.
Inclusive Solutions for People with Disabilities
SATO is committed to inclusivity in sanitation. In Siaya County, SATO introduced toilet models designed for individuals with mobility challenges, such as the elderly and people with disabilities. These toilets feature user-friendly designs that restore dignity and reduce health risks associated with poor sanitation. The initiative has been particularly beneficial in regions declared open defecation free, supporting the maintenance of this status by providing accessible sanitation options for all community members.
Innovative Technology for Improved Hygiene
Our products, including the SATO pan, incorporate innovative features to enhance hygiene. Designed to reduce odour and prevent the entry of insects, these solutions create a more pleasant and sanitary toilet experience. Studies conducted in healthcare facilities in Kisumu have shown that SATO pans are acceptable to users and cleaners, effectively reducing odour in sanitation facilities.
Empowering Women and Creating Opportunities
We believe in empowering women as a cornerstone of community development. We train female sales agents, artisans, and masons, enabling them to install SATO toilets in their communities and promote better sanitation practices.
